Structured Possibility
The relevant field of possible states, relations, actions or outcomes available within the chosen scope.
The I·V·O Lens is a domain-independent framework for examining how possibilities are structured, how relations become instantiated, and how selection occurs within a particular situation.
It does not classify things as O, V or I. It asks what function something performs, within an explicitly defined scope.

The process or condition through which some possibilities become consequential while others do not.
O, V and I are not kinds of objects. The same entity may perform different functions in different aspects of the analysis.
Neither direction is claimed to be a universal temporal sequence. They are analytical movements.
Before assigning O, V or I, the analyst defines the system boundary, scale, time window and question.
Without scope, almost anything can be labelled anything. That is why an operator assignment is written as a functional claim:
Not: X is O.
There may be several materially relevant possibility fields, several instantiated relations and several selective processes operating simultaneously or across scales.
Multiplicity is introduced only when it changes the analysis.
The Lens distinguishes four things that are easily collapsed into one another:
An unexplained effect is not automatically I. A pattern is not automatically V. A background condition is not automatically O.
The framework is intended to constrain interpretation, not provide vocabulary for decorating it.
An assignment that works at one scale does not automatically survive at another.
A person may perform an I-function within a meeting while the meeting itself performs a V-function within an organisation. Those assignments do not cancel each other because their scopes differ.
This is one reason the Lens is domain-independent without requiring the claim that everything is fundamentally made from O, V and I.

Whether this architecture reflects something fundamental about reality remains an open research question.
The framework does not need that stronger claim in order to be useful.

The Lens did not begin as an attempt to construct a universal theory.
It emerged from repeatedly encountering the same practical question in very different environments:
In theatre, small changes in timing could reorganise an entire scene. At sea, the same force produced different consequences depending on configuration and context. In recovery and mental-health practice, behaviour that looked irrational in isolation could become coherent once its surrounding conditions and relations were included.
Reduction gradually produced three recurring analytical functions. O. V. I.
The later framework is an attempt to formalise that observation sufficiently to make it criticisable, reproducible and testable.
Phenomenology was one of the environments in which the Lens developed, not a privileged proof of it.
Questions of observation, experience, self-reference and consciousness remain important research domains for I·V·O. They are investigated with the same discipline as other domains: scope must be explicit, observations must be distinguished from interpretations, and unexplained phenomena are not assigned an operator merely because no better explanation is available.
I·V·O does not replace systems theory, physics, psychology, organisational theory or phenomenology.
It provides a compact notation for asking whether structurally comparable functions can be identified across domains without erasing their differences.
