What can happen?
How constraints, affordances, boundaries and access shape a system’s possibility space.
An independent research environment for the I·V·O Lens, relational systems, observation and the difficult work of turning structural ideas into inspectable measurements.

Design by Authenticity is an independent research platform created by Ivo van der Wal. It develops and tests the I·V·O Lens while keeping current theory, open investigations and historical development distinguishable.
The Lens is a minimal analytical language for examining structured possibility, instantiated relation and situated selectivity within an explicit scope. It is used here to investigate systems without pretending to replace the domain theories, measurements or specialist knowledge those systems require.
The site is both an interface and a record. Some pages present the current framework; others expose instruments, provisional findings, visual experiments, failure modes or older formulations preserved with provenance.
The central question is how structure, relation and observation can be described without collapsing them into one another.
The work sits at the intersection of systems thinking, complex systems, relational analysis and experimental research methodology. Current studies examine partial observability, shared causes, causal inference, measurement limits and failure modes in computational models.
How constraints, affordances, boundaries and access shape a system’s possibility space.
How an instantiated relation can be distinguished from motion, association or a relation merely assumed by a model.
How selection, observer effects and partial access influence the description produced by an instrument.
When observed dependence can support a causal claim, and when shared causes or construction choices remain compatible.
The site can be read, operated and inspected. Different sections expose different layers of the work.
Interactive output is treated as something to question. A compelling visual pattern is not automatically a measurement, and a measurement is not automatically a causal explanation.
Inspect recorded runs, measurement layers and preserved experimental interfaces.
Open instruments →ExperimentChange conditions and watch how relations, boundaries and emergent patterns respond.
Enter the playground →ChallengeFollow hard cases involving self-reference, ambiguity, observer dependence and physical limits.
Read the series →FollowTrace questions, decisions, failed criteria, frozen plans and unresolved work through time.
Open the logbook →ObserveEncounter images and moving fields as studies in attention, state and structural difference.
View Observed →CompareSee how earlier terminology and formulations differ from the current public theory.
Open the archive →The method aims to make the conditions of a claim visible: what was observed, what was derived, what was assumed and what would count against the interpretation.
Falsifiability matters here as a practical discipline. Tests use explicit scopes, frozen procedures where appropriate, failure criteria and stop rules. Reproducibility requires more than repeating an output: the configuration, measurement chain and versioned provenance must also be recoverable.
Constitutive and methodological assumptions are recorded with the consequences of their failure.
Known ambiguity, estimator limits and alternative compatible structures remain part of the result.
A predeclared failed criterion can stop an interpretation instead of being tuned away after inspection.
Historical instruments and documents keep their original status so later canon does not rewrite the record.
Observation, descriptive derivation, model-dependent inference and causal claims are kept distinct.
Research integrity includes publishing limits and changing the framework when a distinction fails.

→The I·V·O Lens is a structural analysis framework for exploring possibility, relation and selection within an explicit scope.
Its canonical operators are O — Structured Possibility, V — Instantiated Relation and I — Situated Selectivity. The current canonical release is v4.1.0 · 1 October 2026. v4.1 strengthens evidence handling and epistemic safeguards while retaining the O/V/I meanings frozen in v4.0.
The versioned release is archived on Zenodo under DOI 10.5281/zenodo.23083767. GitHub preserves source, development history and research records. Read the canonical prompt or explore the framework and theory and notation.
The research connects systems thinking and complex systems with relational systems, emergence, simulation and AI research. Its methodological concerns include falsifiability, reproducibility, causal inference, partial observability, shared causes, observer effects, measurement limits and the study of failure modes. Philosophy of science enters wherever the work must decide what an instrument can observe, what a model may infer and where a claim must stop.
